Susan Barry Roden

Executive Director

When Susan Barry Roden was first diagnosed with breast cancer in 1993 she found herself alone, with no support groups to be found. Susie went through this lonely journey vowing that when she got to the other side, she would make sure that no other woman who was diagnosed with breast cancer in her area would ever feel that same isolation.

In May of 1994, with the encouragement of Martha Rogers, Southampton’s Town Councilwoman, Susie went door-to-door asking women to join with her to form a support organization. With only five members to begin with the South Fork Breast Health Coalition was born. Since that date hundreds and hundreds of women have received help from the Coalition.

What sets the South Fork Breast Health Coalition apart from other organizations? The women (and men) that they’ve helped would probably tell you it’s their heart. From the moment a woman approaches SFBHC, she has a friend who will hold her hand through her journey. They make sure that she has resources that would not be available to her otherwise. The Coalition also provides transportation to doctors' visits and procedures. She is made aware of the groups and wellness programs that provide support for mind, body and spirit. The SFBHC understands that even though a woman may be in the throes of breast cancer, she is still a mother, wife and/or daughter with many family obligations. The South Fork Breast Health Coalition is there to help in any way that is necessary.

The SFBHC’s vision is to continue to provide assistance to women and men with breast cancer through their supportive services. Susie Roden, the woman who began this Coalition, envisions a permanent home that encompasses integrated health care for breast cancer patients and their families.

Cynthia Grant BS, LMT, CLT-LANA

Board Member

Cynthia Grant is a graduate of the New Center for Wholistic Health & Research. She is certified in Complete Decongestive Physiotherapy through the Lymphology Association of North America. Cindy specializes in massage for patients with cancer. She earned her training through Memorial Sloan-Kettering Cancer Center. She developed the first hospital-based lymphedema and massage program on Long Island, NY. Cindy developed a massage therapy policy and procedure manual for the Joint Commission and Accreditation of Health Care Organizations and received high accolades. For the past eleven years, Cindy has been responsible for managing multiple massage programs, one onsite and at three offsite clinics for Southampton Hospital. Currently, she is developing an 8-week mind/body program for cancer patients and cardiac patients, based on Harvard’s Mind/Body Clinic program. Cindy is a board member of the South For Breast Health Coalition. She lectures regularly to the community on the benefits of massage therapy.

Martha M. Rogers

Board Member

Martha Rogers is an attorney and former Southampton Town Councilwoman. As co-founder of the SFBHC, she has worked with other volunteers to give a voice to the east end of Long Island on breast cancer issues and to achieve the dream of eradicating this disease. Marty and her husband Neil reside in Hampton Bays with their three teenage children.

Susan Barylski

Board Member

Susan and her husband Peter live in Water Mill and own a landscape design firm. Susan has been an active board member for the SFBHC for over ten years; since the day she was approached by her neighbor and friend, Susie Roden, to help with a fund-raising event. Today, Susan handles all the fundraising efforts with the support and help of her husband and their two daughters Nicole, 19 and April, 16. Her work with the Coalition has provided an opportunity to help other women and share that positive experience with her family.
