Bosom Buddy (en español)

The Bosom Buddy Outreach Program addresses a critical need of Latina women in our community who face their disease far from family and friends, in a foreign environment and sometimes in poverty. We offer a range of interventions that help Latinas throughout the continuum of breast cancer survivorship including diagnosis, treatment and recovery.

Our Bosom Buddy services include "Patient Navigators" who assist Latinas diaganosed with breast cancer in making appointments for clinical breast exams, pap smears and Mammograms. If needed, Patient Navigators can also accompany them to their appointments and medical follow-ups. This service provides the patient with a supportive advocate, who understands their culture and language.

Our bilingual outreach program is a grass-roots initiative that seeks to strengthen the breast health infrastructure of Latinas. With continued education, outreach and relationship building in the community, we are helping the Latina population. Programs include:

Health Fairs and Medical Services

  • “Pink Fridays”- Held in conjunction with Southampton Hospital’s Breast Health Center, WHP, SFCHI, OLA, Churches
  • Uninsured women will be signed up for The Women’s Health Partnership Program – receiving free clinical breast exams, pap smears, and Mammograms
  • Help with making physician and Mammogram appointments and arrangement of transportation if neccesary
  • Spanish outreach worker available

Spanish Speaking Women diagnosed with Breast Cancer

  • Our Spanish speaking Patient Navigator will accompany patient to appointments if necessary
  • Transportation is supplied if necessary
  • Financial Assistance arranged if needed – “Lend a Helping Hand”
  • A follow- up phone call will be made to see if the woman kept her appointment
  • Once a woman has a Mammogram, Southampton Hospital sends out yearly reminder letters
  • Evaluations: Number of women signed up for Mammograms and number of women who kept their appointment and reasons why appointments were not kept
  • Evaluation postcard in Spanish will be filled out with patient advocate’s help
  • Patient Progress Notes are kept in a log book and reviewed after each physician visit
